Econcern to lead $1 bln China wind farm investment

LONDON, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Clean energy company Econcern will partner with China National Offshore Oil Corp and Sinohydro to invest 863 million euros ($1.09 billion) to build four Chinese wind farms, the companies said on Tuesday.

Construction of the wind farms, which will generate around 720 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy, will begin in 2009, Netherlands-based Econcern said in a statement.

As atmospheric greenhouse gas levels from burning fossil fuels rise, increasing the threat of potentially devastating climate change, more companies are looking to invest in renewable sources of energy like wind and solar.

'Traditional energy suppliers focus on conventional models and solutions, but this is no longer sustainable in any sense,' Econcern Chairman Ad van Wijk said. 'Sustainable energy is the only long term viable option.'

Last month, BP Alternative Energy, a unit of oil group BP Plc, pulled out of a partnership in a 148.5 MW Chinese wind farm project, saying it had decided to suspend its wind power business in Asia.

Econcern's announcement comes on the sidelines of UN-sponsored climate talks in Poznan, Poland where governments are working towards a new treaty to fight climate change.

JA Solar Holdings and BP subsidiary say they plan long-term development and marketing deal

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - JA Solar Holdings Co. and an alternative-energy subsidiary of oil giant BP PLC said Thursday they plan to jointly develop and sell solar-power unit components over the next five years.

A final agreement is expected before year-end.

JA Solar said it expected to contribute manufacturing and access to third-party silicon or wafers used in photovoltaic units, while BP expected to add access to its own supplies and customer list.
JA Solar, based in Hebei, China, makes monocrystalline solar cells for sale to manufacturers that assemble them into systems to convert sunlight into electricity.

BP Alternative Energy Holdings Ltd. has 2,300 employees and makes solar-energy products for residential, commercial and industrial customers.

BP quits wind farm project with China's Goldwind

SHANGHAI, Nov 6 (Reuters) - BP Alternative Energy, a unit of oil group BP Plc (BP.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), has pulled out of a partnership in a wind farm project with a subsidiary of Goldwind Science & Technology Co 002202.SZ, Goldwind said on Thursday.

Goldwind, China's largest maker of wind turbines, said BP had decided to suspend its wind power business in Asia, according to a statement posted on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.

BP Alternative Energy and Beijing Tianrun New Energy Investment Co, a subsidiary of Goldwind, signed a framework agreement in January to develop wind farms with planned total capacity of 148.5 megawatts (MW) in Inner Mongolia, China's top base for wind power.

A Goldwind statement from January said BP would buy a 49 percent stake in the joint venture.
China ranked as the world's fifth-largest for installed wind capacity in 2007, accounting for about 6 percent of the total 94 gigawatts (GW), according to the Global Wind Energy Council.

Goldwind said the construction of the wind farm was expected to be completed in February 2009, and it was seeking new partners.

BP Alternative Energy combines BP's interests in low and zero-carbon power generation, including wind, solar and hydrogen power.
